John Daly Eyes Ryder Cup Role, Endorses Tiger Woods as 2027 Captain

John Daly hopes for a late Ryder Cup role in 2027 and praises Tiger Woods as a potential U.S. team captain.

In an exclusive interview with Hard Rock Bet, John Daly shared his ambitions to be part of the U.S. Ryder Cup team in 2027. Despite being a two-time major champion, Daly remains the only major winner since the Ryder Cup’s inception in 1927 to have never participated in the event. At 59, he still sees a slim chance to contribute as a captain or vice-captain, though he admitted that being named captain for the 2027 edition at Adare Manor in Ireland is unlikely.

Tiger Woods as Captain? Daly Thinks So

“I would love to be a captain one day, but I don’t think it’ll ever happen,” Daly said. Still, he went on to express his admiration for Tiger Woods, saying he could easily envision Woods leading the U.S. team. “Tiger would be an incredible captain,” Daly added. “I’d love to be a vice-captain or just part of the team in any way.”

While Daly’s own appointment as vice-captain may seem far-fetched, many American fans would likely support a leadership duo of Woods and Daly. Daly believes his presence could help loosen up the team and bring a more relaxed energy. “I’d love to bring in my ideas and hopefully help the guys,” he said. “It’s something I’ve dreamed of since winning the PGA Championship in 1991.” Daly also mentioned he felt he should have been selected for the team twice in the past, but “it just didn’t happen.”

Patriotism Drives Daly’s Ryder Cup Dream

For Daly, any role with the Ryder Cup team would be a meaningful consolation, especially as a proud American patriot. “I think our team needs to come together more like a family and fully stand behind the United States of America, instead of worrying about personal gain,” he said. “I just want to win the Ryder Cup.”

John Daly remains one of the most beloved figures in American golf. Known for his massive drives and colorful personality, he won the 1991 PGA Championship and the 1995 Open Championship. Despite his success, he is still the only major winner never to have played in the Ryder Cup. Nicknamed “Long John,” Daly is also remembered for his unconventional behavior, including drinking beer and smoking during his first major appearance. His outspoken patriotism continues to resonate with fans across the U.S.
