Hot Tips for Cold Golf Days – Stay Warm and Mobile

Golfing in cold weather? No problem. Just avoid common mistakes with pro tips for staying warm on chilly golf days.Golfing in autumn and winter is different from summer. The ball doesn’t fly the same in the cold, padded clothing can restrict your swing, and footing on soon-to-freeze ground can be tricky. But despite winter temperatures, no one has to skip their round. You just need to be properly equipped and prepared.

Warming Up is Key

Ralf Schwarz, a coach with the Bavarian Golf Association based in the Allgäu region known for its frosty, unpleasant conditions from October to April, explains that when it’s cold, golfers tend to move less freely. This makes a thorough warm-up indispensable, lasting at least ten minutes. Without it, muscles don’t warm up properly, increasing injury risk, especially strains. Warming also activates the cardiovascular system; running in place and arm movements help warm the body, hands, and feet early on. Schwarz advises staying in motion throughout, which makes a big difference.

Top Winter Golf Tips at a Glance

  • Choose softer golf balls to counteract the hardening caused by cold temperatures and improve feel. Keeping the ball in your pocket between holes to warm it briefly also helps.
  • Opt for a longer club if in doubt – for example, use a 6-iron instead of a 7-iron as the ball flies shorter in cold weather.
  • Wear multiple layers rather than one thick or too few; you can always remove layers but not add if not brought.
  • Bring a warm drink on the course, such as tea with a little sugar or broth.
  • Get inexpensive hand warmers for your pockets that provide warmth for about two hours.
  • Carry your golf bag rather than push it to keep your circulation—and body heat—active.
  • Manage your expectations as the ball won’t travel as far in the cold and you likely won’t have a scoring highlight, so use the opportunity to try something new.

Proper Equipment: Layering and Wind Protection

Those undeterred by cold should pay attention to appropriate gear. As most body heat is lost through the head, a warm hat is essential alongside clubs and balls. Schwarz also recommends lightweight, insulating functional clothing like ski underwear and, instead of a heavy winter jacket, a windproof layer.
