German-speaking players struggled on day two of the Hero Dubai Desert Classic with several missing the cut.
After a promising start to the week, Friday did not go as hoped for golfers from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic on the DP World Tour. Nicolai Von Dellingshausen shot a 74, dropping from fifth place the day before to the middle of the field. Freddy Schott barely made the cut with a 74. Marcel Schneider also failed to stay under par compared to the previous day, finishing one over par. Joel Girrbach had the worst day, scoring a 77 and just barely making the cut despite his strong Thursday round. Marcel Siem, Bernd Wiesberger, and Maximilian Steinbach missed the cut. Even the stars struggled in Dubai; Rory McIlroy matched Von Dellingshausen with a 70, and Tommy Fleetwood also narrowly made the cut. Patrick Reed leads after two rounds with 9 under par.
Triple Bogey Ruins Von Dellingshausen’s Chance to Climb
On Thursday, Nicolai Von Dellingshausen played an excellent round under challenging windy conditions, putting himself in a position to possibly achieve a top result this week. However, his chances faded early on Friday when he recorded a triple bogey on his third hole. His drive landed in a bunker, and his escape attempt went out of bounds, leading to a drop. Things did not improve as he completed the par-4 13th hole in seven strokes. Nevertheless, he recovered somewhat with three birdies on the back nine to bring his score to even par after nine holes. His front nine, however, was problematic, with three consecutive bogeys from holes 5 to 7. A birdie on the final 9th hole brought him to 2 over par, dropping him to 33rd place.
Joel Girrbach fared even worse after starting the day tied for third following a 68 on Thursday. He began well with a birdie on his first hole but failed to record another birdie for the rest of the day. Bogeys on holes 11 and 12 put him at +1 after the back nine. The front nine was disastrous with four more bogeys and no birdies, resulting in a total of 5 over par and a drop to 60th place—just making the cut.
DP World Tour: Eagle on 18 a Silver Lining for Marcel Siem
Marcel Siem had a tough week. After an even-par round on Thursday, he struggled through Friday, shooting a 76 and finishing 82nd, missing the weekend cut. Four bogeys on the front nine and no birdies set a difficult tone early for the 45-year-old. Additional bogeys on the 12th and 15th holes further hurt his score. However, Siem showed flashes of his skill on the par-5 18th hole, nearly making an albatross, missing by just two meters, and secured an eagle to improve his score to 76.
