David Puig fired a final-round 66 to win the BMW Australian PGA Championship — his first career victory on the DP World Tour.
Spain’s David Puig secured his maiden DP World Tour title on Sunday by winning the BMW Australian PGA Championship. Puig finished the tournament at 18-under-par, two strokes ahead of China’s Wenyi Ding. A group of six Australians followed closely behind. German players Freddy Schott and Yannik Paul were unable to make a significant impact on the final day. Paul slipped down the leaderboard with a 74, while Schott climbed slightly with a 69.
DP World Tour: Flawless finish earns Puig first title
David Puig’s season debut on the DP World Tour couldn’t have gone better. The Spaniard made just two bogeys all week and delivered a bogey-free final round. He started strong with birdies on holes 2, 3, and 4, quickly taking the lead as his main challengers from the previous day, Ricardo Gouveia and Anthony Quayle, faltered with rounds of +1 and +2. Puig extended his lead with a long birdie putt on the 8th and added another birdie on the 13th after sticking his approach close to the hole. Despite a strong round from Wenyi Ding, Puig calmly closed out the win with five pars to finish on the 18th.
Mixed results for Schott and Paul
It was a tough week for Germans Freddy Schott and Yannik Paul. Schott managed a 2-under final round to move up to T41, while Paul dropped to T56 after a 3-over 74. Schott had a promising front nine with a -4, but three bogeys on the back nine halted his momentum. He did provide a highlight on the par-3 17th, nearly acing it as his tee shot skipped just inches past the hole. Paul, on the other hand, couldn’t find rhythm. After a birdie and a bogey on the front nine, he stumbled with three more bogeys on holes 10, 13, and 15, ending with a disappointing round.
