Donald Trump Terminates Leases of Public Golf Courses in Washington, D.C.

The Trump administration terminates leases of Washington, D.C.’s public golf courses amid dispute over investments and future plans.

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump announced the termination of lease agreements for three public golf courses in the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. These include the historically significant Rock Creek, Langston, and East Potomac golf courses located within the city. Notably, East Potomac Golf Course offers a prominent view of the Washington Monument and surrounding landscapes. This decision reflects the President’s pattern of prioritizing his brand and vision over urban infrastructure in the capital.

NLT Invested Millions in Renovation and Modernization

The National Links Trust (NLT), a nonprofit organization operating the three courses for about five years, claims to have invested $8.5 million in renovations. The NLT has engaged golf architects Gil Hanse, Tom Doak, and Beau Welling to lead the renovations, with the architects providing their expertise pro bono. These investments have doubled both the number of rounds played and revenues during operation.

In mid-December 2025, Donald Trump threatened to terminate the NLT’s leases, alleging breaches of contract, which the NLT denies, expressing confusion over the government’s claims. Earlier, in October, the government deposited debris from the demolished East Wing of the White House on East Potomac grounds.

Trump Administration Enforces Termination of 50-Year Leases

On Wednesday, the U.S. government followed through with terminating the 50-year leases, citing unmet investment requirements and contractual breaches. The courses lie mainly on National Park Service land under the Department of the Interior.

The NLT expressed deep disappointment with the decision, emphasizing it has fulfilled all contractual obligations to ensure a strong future for public golf in Washington, D.C. The organization disputes the government’s claims of contract violations. The Interior Department stated pride in fulfilling duties for the American public and partnering with aligned organizations.

East Potomac at the Center of Trump’s Golf Vision

East Potomac has become a focal point of the President’s interest. Offering breathtaking views of the Washington Monument and Potomac River, its renovation is seen as a model for nationwide democratization of golf. Sources familiar with government plans reveal Trump intends to transform East Potomac into a championship course capable of hosting professional events, possibly including the Ryder Cup, although the next available Ryder Cup slot is in 2041 and 2037’s event is already scheduled nearby. Trump’s vision includes replacing the three volunteer architects with Tom Fazio, who has long-standing professional ties to the President.

In December, the President promised that residents of Washington, D.C. would continue to enjoy discounted play on a Trump-designed course, a promise at odds with the high costs of his twelve privately operated golf courses worldwide.
