Donald Trump Terminates Leases of Public Golf Courses in Washington, D.C.

The Trump administration ends leases for Washington, D.C.’s public golf courses, citing investment and future plans concerns.

The government of US President Donald Trump has terminated the leases of three historic public golf courses located in the capital: Rock Creek, Langston, and East Potomac. Notably, East Potomac Golf Course offers players stunning views of the Washington Monument and surrounding landscapes. This decision reflects the President’s pattern of prioritizing his brand and vision over the city’s public infrastructure.

NLT Invested Millions in Renovation and Modernization

The National Links Trust (NLT), a nonprofit organization, has managed these courses for about five years and claims to have invested $8.5 million in their restoration. A comprehensive renovation plan involving golf architects Gil Hanse, Tom Doak, and Beau Welling was initiated, with the architects volunteering their expertise free of charge. These investments helped double both rounds played and revenue during the NLT’s management.

In December 2025, Donald Trump threatened to terminate the leases, alleging the NLT violated lease agreements. The NLT denied knowledge of such violations and was surprised by the administration’s threats. Earlier, in October, the government dumped demolition debris from the White House’s East Wing onto East Potomac’s grounds.

Trump Administration Executes 50-Year Lease Terminations

On Wednesday, the administration fulfilled the threat, ending the 50-year leases citing the NLT’s failure to make required investments and comply with contract terms. The courses mostly sit on National Park Service lands, a Department of the Interior agency.

The NLT expressed deep disappointment, stating they have met all contractual obligations to secure the future of public golf in Washington, D.C. They disputed the government’s claims of violations. The Interior Department responded that the administration is proud to fulfill its duties and collaborate with partners sharing its goals.

East Potomac at the Center of Trump’s Golf Vision

East Potomac has become the focus of presidential plans. With breathtaking views of the Washington Monument and Potomac River, its renovation is seen as a model for democratizing golf nationwide. However, sources indicate Trump intends to transform East Potomac into a championship course possibly hosting professional tournaments including the Ryder Cup. Despite the next available Ryder Cup slot being in 2041—with 2037 already scheduled at Congressional Golf Club—Trump plans to replace volunteer architects with Tom Fazio, known for longstanding ties to the President.

In December, Trump promised discounted access for Washington residents on a reimagined course, though this contrasts with the high prices typical of his privately-owned golf properties worldwide.
