Donald Trump Terminates Leases for Public Golf Courses in Washington, D.C.

The Trump administration terminates leases of public golf courses in Washington, D.C., citing investments and future plans.

The government of US President Donald Trump announced the termination of leases for three public golf courses in the U.S. capital: Rock Creek, Langston, and East Potomac, all historically significant and located within the city. East Potomac Golf Course is prominently visible near the Washington Monument, offering players stunning views of the surrounding landscape. This decision to end the leases reflects the president’s pattern of prioritizing his brand and vision over the city’s infrastructure.

NLT Invested Millions in Renovation and Modernization

The National Links Trust (NLT), a nonprofit organization, has managed these courses for about five years and claims to have invested $8.5 million in renovations. They engaged architects Gil Hanse, Tom Doak, and Beau Welling to lead the renovations, who contributed their expertise pro bono. Thanks to these investments, NLT doubled both rounds played and revenue during their management.

In mid-December 2025, Trump warned NLT of lease termination due to alleged contract violations, though NLT denied any knowledge of such breaches and was surprised by the government’s threats. Earlier in October, the administration dumped debris from the demolished East Wing of the White House on East Potomac’s grounds.

Trump Administration Enforces 50-Year Lease Terminations

On Wednesday, the administration followed through, terminating the 50-year lease agreement with NLT, citing lack of required investments and contract breaches. These courses are mainly on National Park Service lands, under the Department of the Interior. NLT expressed deep dismay over the decision, emphasizing it fulfilled all contractual obligations since taking stewardship of the courses, aiming to provide the best public golf experience in Washington, D.C.

NLT strongly disagreed with the government’s claim of contract violations. The Interior Department responded, stating pride in fulfilling duties for the American public and working with partners sharing that mission.

East Potomac at the Center of Trump’s Golf Vision

East Potomac has become a focus for Trump, offering spectacular views of the Washington Monument and Potomac River. Renovating this site could serve as a nationwide example for democratizing golf. Sources close to the administration indicate plans to transform East Potomac into a championship course capable of hosting professional tournaments, possibly including the Ryder Cup, although the next available Ryder Cup date is in 2041, with the 2037 event already scheduled nearby. Trump’s vision involves replacing the current volunteer architects with Tom Fazio, a longtime associate.

In December, Trump promised affordable play for D.C. residents on a redesigned course, yet this commitment contrasts with his twelve privately owned courses globally, among the most expensive in the industry.
