Donald Trump Cancels Leases of Washington D.C. Public Golf Courses

The Trump administration cancels leases of public golf courses in Washington D.C., citing investments and future plans.

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump announced the termination of leases for three public golf courses in the capital Washington, D.C. These include the historically significant Rock Creek, Langston, and East Potomac golf courses located within the city. Especially notable is East Potomac, prominently situated with a direct view of the Washington Monument, offering players excellent scenic views. This lease termination reflects the president’s broader pattern of prioritizing his brand and vision over urban infrastructure in the nation’s capital.

NLT Invested Millions in Renovation and Modernization

The National Links Trust (NLT) has operated these three courses as a non-profit organization for about five years and has reportedly invested $8.5 million in renovations. An extensive renovation plan was proposed, with golf architects Gil Hanse, Tom Doak, and Beau Welling commissioned to lead the refurbishments, offering their expertise free of charge. These investments have doubled both rounds played and revenue during operation.

In mid-December 2025, Donald Trump threatened to cancel the NLT’s leases, alleging breach of contract terms. The NLT denied knowledge of any violations and expressed confusion over the government’s threats. In October, the administration even dumped debris from the White House East Wing demolition on East Potomac grounds.

Trump Administration Enforces Cancellation of 50-Year Leases

On Wednesday, the U.S. government executed its threat, terminating the 50-year leases due to alleged unfulfilled investment obligations and contractual breaches. The courses largely sit on National Park Service land under the Interior Department.

The NLT expressed deep disappointment, affirming full compliance with contractual obligations to sustain public golf in Washington, D.C. The department said the administration is proud to fulfill its duties and partner with aligned stakeholders.

East Potomac in Focus for Trump’s Golf Vision

East Potomac has become central to the president’s plans, with its stunning views potentially setting a national model for democratizing golf. Sources familiar with government intentions reveal Trump aims to transform East Potomac into a championship course hosting pro events including possibly the Ryder Cup, although the next Ryder Cup slot is in 2041 after Congressional Club in 2037. Trump plans to replace the voluntary architects with Tom Fazio, a long-time associate. In December, Trump promised residents discounted access at the revamped course, yet this contrasts with his globally expensive private courses.
