PGA Tour: Rookie Leads With Round of 59

Shots are being fired low at the PGA Tour’s John Deere Classic. Defending champion Sepp Straka started with a round of 66 and is still only in 27th place, while the leader Hayden Springer celebrated the fourth of July with his very own fireworks: a round of 59 and still only matching the course record.

PGA Tour: With an eagle-birdie finish to 59

Springer has only been on the PGA Tour since this year and can already count himself among an elite circle of players who have finished a round with fewer than 60 strokes. There have been a total of 14 rounds under 60, 13 including Springer with a 59 and Jim Furyk with a 58. Springer started with an eagle on hole 2 and followed it up with six birdies on the front nine alone. The birdie fireworks then dried up a little on the back nine. It wasn’t until the 15th that he gained a stroke to get to nine under par, by which time the prospect of a 59 was already close. But he kept his chances alive with an eagle hole-out on the 17th and completed the rare result with a birdie on the 18th.

“It’s like something you dream of, right?”, Springer said after his round. “We all want to go out and shoot 59. You don’t ever really — I don’t know how many chances I’ll ever get at doing that again. To pull it off and hole that shot on 17 and give myself a putt at it and make the putt on 18 was pretty special.”

Paul Goydos already managed a round of 59 at the John Deere Classic in 2010, but the course was played as a par 70 on that occasion.

Olympic Games: Dutchman sues his way into golf tournament, but…

After the Dutch National Olympic Committee (NOC) refused to allow three qualified athletes to take part in the Paris Games, DP World Tour pro Joost Luiten successfully appealed against his exclusion. The 38-year-old announced this on Instagram on Wednesday. Golf Post spoke to Luiten about the events after his first round at the BMW International Open and the Dutchman explained his situation in detail for the first time.

“I basically sued the National Olympic Committee”, Luiten told Golf Post. “I didn’t agree with the way it went down. I didn’t agree with the rules they had in place. Halfway through the qualification year, they changed the rules. So it was all one big mess and then, you know, I didn’t meet their criteria. But if they would have started those criteria from the start, I would have qualified straight away in two events.”

According to the rules of the International Golf Federation (IGF) and the IOC, the top 15 in the Olympic Golf Ranking (OGR), which is based on the world golf rankings, qualify – with a maximum of four athletes per country. The 60-strong field will then be filled with the best outside the top 15, with a maximum of two participants per country. In the case of the Netherlands, these are Darius van Driel and Joost Luiten for the men and Anne van Dam and Dewi Weber for the women. However, the Dutch Olympic Committee had its own criteria for golf, which Luiten and others did not fulfil after they were implemented. However, this only happened after the IGF qualification process had long since begun.

As obliged by the court, the Dutch NOC nominated Luiten in time for the tournament at Le Golf National near Paris. But now there is a new problem. “There’s another bit of trouble because now all of a sudden there are 61 people in the field, not 60, because the IOC gave my spot away already. So now it looks like I could go from one court case to the next, but that’s not what I want. Hopefully they can sort the issue”, says the young family man, fearing for his eligibility to compete.

Luiten’s dissatisfaction with his National Olympic Committee goes far beyond the refusal to nominate him: “The whole problem in Holland is that if you let some people that only know the traditional Olympic sports, swimming, athletics, and stuff like that, if you let them make the rules on golf, you get some silly rules. And that’s what basically this is all about. Showing them that they had no clue what they were doing and that it had nothing to do with golf. Unfortunately I had to go to court for it, but at least now hopefully it will open their eyes.”

Gareth Bale on Football and Golf: “The German Fans Are Amazing”

With a handicap of 2, Gareth Bale is not only a successful athlete on the football pitch, but also impresses with strong golfing performances at various ProAm tournaments. This was also the case at the 35th edition of the BMW International Open. He already made his PGA Tour debut last year and teed it up at the Pebble Beach ProAm, shortly after he came to Germany to the Munich Eichenried Golf Club. Now he can already look back on his second ProAm at this tournament and, in his press conference after his round in the group with Danny Willett and long driver Martin Borgmeier, was delighted with the course conditions and the German fans. In addition to golf, the current number one football topic was of course also on the agenda. The European Championship in Germany is inspiring the Welsh international, but he did not get carried away with a tip for the outcome of the match between Germany and Spain and chose a diplomatic answer.

Gareth Bale: “The german fans are amazing”

This is Gareth Bale’s second visit to the BMW International Open and the Welshman is delighted with Golfclub München Eichenried and his round: “The golf course is in great condition again. It was great fun and I definitely played better than last year”. There is great anticipation for an exciting 35th edition of the tournament and a look at the strong field of participants also promises high tension. “It is obviously a lot of great players playing. From being here last year, the fans are amazing and very supportive. I am sure it will be another great week”. However, the footballer does not want to commit himself to a possible winner: “There will be a worthy champion at the end”. However, one stands out for Bale too. Bernhard Langer is celebrating his farewell from the DP World Tour and European professional sport this week, which of course also leaves its mark on golf fan Bale: The longevity, the amount of golf he has played and the career he has had is incredible”.

Euro 2024 in Germany: A highlight, also for Gareth Bale

Gareth Bale can look back on a successful football career in which he made a name for himself in various teams with very good performances. He also played for many years in the Welsh national team, where he became the record player with 111 appearances and 41 goals. So the question on the European Football Championship in Germany is an obvious one: “I haven’t been to any games but I’m going to the finals in Berlin. It’s nice to have the tournament back in one country”. However, the football star refrains from making any predictions about the outcome of the match between Germany and Spain this Friday (July 5): “It’s one of those games, whoever turns up on the day. They both have fantastic teams. Germany obviously has the home advantage. Who plays better on that day will win the game”.
