Costly Penalty at Q-School Derails Ben Kohles’ PGA Tour Hopes

A critical mistake during Q-School cost Ben Kohles his chance at earning a full PGA Tour card for the upcoming season.

In the high-pressure environment of Q-School’s final round at TPC Sawgrass’ Valley Course, Ben Kohles was tied for the lead when disaster struck. Over the span of just two holes, he went from potential PGA Tour member to missing out entirely.

Penalty for Ball Movement Ends Kohles’ Run

On the 8th hole, Kohles drove his ball into the trees, where it came to rest among scattered leaves. While clearing debris around his ball, he accidentally caused it to move, resulting in a one-stroke penalty. He went on to make double bogey, dropping to nine-under and tied for 8th place—still within reach of a Tour card.

However, the situation worsened on the very next hole. At the par-4 9th, Kohles hit his tee shot into the water, incurring another penalty and another double bogey. He fell to T22 heading into the back nine, effectively ending his hopes.

Q-School Format Leaves No Room for Error

This year’s Q-School Finals were especially unforgiving due to a format change: only the top five finishers earn PGA Tour cards. In previous years, ties for fifth place also qualified, but the new rules leave no margin for mistakes.

Kohles, a professional since 2012, has had multiple stints on the PGA Tour, including the 2025 season, where he finished 145th in the FedExCup standings. That result grants him limited status for 2026, but his dream of full-time status will have to wait after Sunday’s heartbreak.
