Membership Renewed, No Ban: Koepka Back on the PGA Tour Immediately

First start already at the Farmers, Vijay Singh ready for a comeback, Charley Hull soon on YouTube. The Back Nine.

As expected, Brooks Koepka has opted out of the 2026 LIV Golf season starting February 7 in Riyadh; the five-time major champion remains connected to the rival circuit but needs more time for his family. This was reportedly agreed upon amicably, according to an official statement by LIV CEO Scott McNeil. Koepka, known as a competitor who thrives on top-level competition, showed limited enthusiasm for LIV. Initially, he joined LIV in 2022 mainly as injuries threatened his career’s end and to secure a substantial retirement fund. Given this, his opting out of the final contracted season raises questions, such as whether he had to buy out his contract or return part of his guaranteed pay. He still owns the LIV team Smash GC, which appointed Talor Gooch as the new captain.

Speculation revolves around which fairways Koepka will next appear on: the DP World Tour where he would be immediately eligible, possibly facing a penalty, or the PGA Tour, where he must serve a one-year suspension since his last LIV appearance after previous lifetime bans were softened. This critical question seems partly answered. ESPN journalist Mark Schlabach reported that Koepka formally applied last Friday to reactivate his PGA Tour membership, which was not renewed after 2022, seeking reinstatement.

An eventual suspension would expire in August, coinciding with the end of the 2026 season at the Tour Championship. Koepka would be eligible for the 2027 season, aligning with the PGA Tour’s compressed schedule of nearly two dozen $20 million tournaments featuring limited, top-tier fields—ideal timing for a comeback. This move would also appeal to investors in PGA Tour Enterprises, likely the backers of the new top league.

\”He might need some time, but I think he’ll return to the PGA Tour,\” said Jon Rahm recently on the “Subpar” podcast. \”He’ll probably play at least the minimum, and why not the tournaments he likes, the big ones. If he can qualify or be invited to prestigious events, he would play those too.\” There is speculation that the PGA Tour, including its board, player directors, and the Tiger Woods-led competition committee, may overlook Koepka’s suspension given Rory McIlroy’s endorsement of Koepka’s immediate return.

Update: It has happened. On Monday evening local time, news spread quickly that Koepka is immediately eligible again on the PGA Tour and will tee off at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in late January. His participation in the WM Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale, Arizona, is also confirmed.

This became possible through the \”Returning Member Program,\” a new rule created last Thursday allowing selected LIV players to rejoin the PGA Tour without suspension. Koepka’s recent sporting merits, especially his 2023 PGA Championship win as his fifth major, were considered.

The PGA Tour stated this special provision applies to major winners and Players champions from the past three years. The deadline is February 2. \”This is a one-time, clearly defined opportunity
