As expected, Brooks Koepka has opted out of the LIV Golf League for the 2026 season starting February 7 in Riyadh. The five-time major champion remains connected to the competing circuit but needs more family time. This was reportedly agreed upon amicably, according to LIV CEO Scott McNeil. Koepka, a competitive spirit who thrives on high-level competition, was only moderately motivated at LIV. He initially joined in 2022 mainly due to injury concerns, seeking a financial cushion for his retirement fund. It’s no surprise he declined the last contract year, though questions remain about any buyout or repayment. Despite this, he retains ownership of his LIV team Smash GC, which has already appointed Talor Gooch as the new captain.
Speculation abounds regarding which tour Koepka will next compete on. He is immediately eligible for the DP World Tour, possibly subject to penalties, or on the PGA Tour, where he would serve a one-year suspension following his last LIV appearance, after formerly lifetime bans by ex-commissioner Jay Monahan were considerably softened. Why be vengeful when any LIV returnee, especially a high-profile player, benefits the more powerful PGA Tour? This question seems partially answered. ESPN’s Mark Schlabach reported that last Friday Koepka formally requested reinstatement of his PGA Tour membership not extended after 2022.
