As expected, Brooks Koepka has opted out of the 2026 LIV Golf season starting February 7 in Riyadh; the five-time major champion intends to remain connected with the rival circuit while needing more time for his family. This was reportedly a mutual agreement, according to LIV CEO Scott McNeil’s official statement. But Koepka is known as a competitive player who thrives in top-level competition, something he experienced only to a limited extent in LIV. He moved there in 2022 mainly due to injury concerns and the desire to secure a comfortable retirement fund. Given this, his decision to forgo the last contracted season is not surprising, though some questions remain regarding potential buyouts or repayment of guaranteed fees. He also remains owner of the LIV team Smash GC, now captained by Talor Gooch.
Speculation is rife about where Koepka will play next. The DP World Tour would grant him immediate eligibility, perhaps with a penalty fee. The PGA Tour, where he is currently serving a one-year suspension from his last LIV appearance—this suspension having been softened from an initial lifetime ban imposed by former Commissioner Jay Monahan—is another possibility. It makes little sense to be vindictive when every returning LIV player, especially a high-profile one, benefits the PGA Tour. ESPN journalist Mark Schlabach reported that Koepka formally requested reinstatement of his PGA Tour membership last Friday.
