As expected, Brooks Koepka has officially opted out of the 2026 LIV Golf season beginning February 7 in Riyadh; the five-time major winner will stay connected to the rival circuit but needs more time for his family, according to LIV CEO Scott McNeil’s friendly statement. Koepka, known as a competitive type who thrives on high-level competition, lacked full motivation at LIV, having joined in 2022 mainly due to injury concerns and financial security for retirement. His skipping of the final contracted season raises questions about possible buyouts or penalties and whether he remains an owner of LIV’s Smash GC team, now captained by Talor Gooch.
Speculation abounds about which tours Koepka will compete on next – the DP World Tour where he would be immediately eligible, likely paying a penalty, or the PGA Tour, where he faces a one-year suspension after his last LIV event, yet lifetime bans imposed under former commissioner Jay Monahan were significantly softened. Importantly, reports from ESPN’s Mark Schlabach reveal Koepka formally applied last Friday to reactivate his membership in the PGA Tour, seeking reinstatement to the players’ roster.
