Nerve-racking Bahrain: Freddy Schott wins in a playoff against Reed and Hill, celebrates his first DP World Tour victory and rises to 9th in the Race to Dubai.
At the Royal Golf Club in Bahrain, the Bapco Energies Bahrain Championship on the DP World Tour remained thrilling until the final moment. In a tight contest between Scotsman Calum Hill, American Patrick Reed and German Freddy Schott, it was Schott who emerged victorious in a tense playoff on the final day. This win marks Schott’s first triumph on the DP World Tour, catapulting the Düsseldorf native up 94 places to 9th in the Race to Dubai rankings.
Trio shares the lead after final round
All three players finished the final Sunday tied at 17 under par atop the leaderboard. Freddy Schott improved by one stroke from the previous day with a 69. He shined with four birdies on the front nine but faced a bogey on hole 8. His back nine was steady, despite a double bogey on the 11th, balanced by three birdies and another bogey, resulting in three under par for the day.
American Patrick Reed carded a 67, five under par, including seven birdies and two bogeys, nearly matching his best round of the tournament, a 66 on Saturday.
Scot Calum Hill shot an even par 71 on the final day. Thanks to his brilliant 61 on Friday, Hill had a slight cushion but couldn’t hold off his rivals. His round included five birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey, which was not enough for an outright win at Royal Golf Club.
DP World Tour: Dramatic playoff decision in favor of Freddy Schott
The playoff began with Schott making par. Reed bogeyed with a five, while Hill also made par, forcing an 18th-hole playoff again. On the second playoff hole, Hill struggled with a seven on the par-4, falling short. Schott played even par to clinch the tournament victory.
Spanish star Sergio García, who had held the lead multiple times during the event, shot a 68 on the final day to tie for fourth place alongside New Zealander Daniel Hillier, both finishing at 16 under par.
