Stephan Jäger had an outstanding start on Thursday at the Farmers Insurance Open on the PGA Tour. Shooting a 65, he tied for 5th place and is close to the lead. Other German players had a tougher time. Thomas Rosenmüller posted a 2-under 70 to tie for 55th, ahead of Jeremy Paul, who shot even par and tied for 87th, and Matti Schmid, who finished one over par and tied for 101st heading into day two. Sharing the same score as Matti Schmid is LIV Golf returnee Brooks Koepka, who struggled in his first tournament back on the American tour. Justin Rose leads after the first day with 10 under par.
PGA Tour: Stephan Jäger Nearly Flawless
Stephan Jäger had his best start in a while at the Farmers Insurance Open on the PGA Tour. On the North Course at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, he played an almost flawless round, with only a shaky start. On the first hole, his second shot landed in a bunker near the green, and he failed the up-and-down to start with a bogey. However, Jäger was not discouraged. On hole 3, he reset with a strong tee shot on the 150-meter par 3 and scored a birdie. An excellent stretch from holes 7 to 9, where he birdied all three, brought him to 3 under par after the front nine. His birdie on hole 8 was a highlight as he holed an impressive bunker shot. Maintaining momentum, the 36-year-old started the back nine with two birdies and added two more on holes 16 and 17, finishing with 7 under par and tied for fifth for the rest of the week.
Thomas Rosenmüller had a steadier round, also starting with a bogey but birdied hole 9 to reach even par after nine holes. He added birdies on holes 11 and 17, finishing with a 70 and tied for 55th.
Jeremy Paul started on the back nine but struggled on the front nine with three bogeys that pushed him back. Despite three birdies, he ended up even par and tied for 87th.
Matti Schmid also started on the back nine and managed three birdies but couldn’t overcome four bogeys due to inconsistent putting, finishing one over par in a tie for 101st. He will need a strong second round to make the cut.
