PGA Tour: Stephan Jager Opens Top 5 as Brooks Koepka Returns with Challenges

Stephan Jager is in the Top 5 after an excellent 65 in the Farmers Insurance Open on the PGA Tour. Brooks Koepka struggles in his comeback.

Stephan Jager had a fantastic start on Thursday at the Farmers Insurance Open on the PGA Tour. With a round of 65, he tied for 5th and is close to the lead. Other Germans had a tougher time. Thomas Rosenmüller finished 2 under par T55, ahead of Jeremy Paul at even par T87 and Matti Schmid, who finished 1 over par at T101. LIV Golf returnee Brooks Koepka, in his first tournament back on the American Tour, also struggled and is tied with Matti Schmid. Justin Rose leads after day one at 10 under par.

PGA Tour: Stephan Jager Nearly Flawless

Stephan Jager had his best start in a long time at the Farmers Insurance Open on the PGA Tour. On the North Course of Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, he played an almost flawless round, with only the start not quite perfect. His second shot on the first hole landed in a bunker near the green, and he failed to get up and down, starting his day with a bogey. However, Jager was not discouraged. On hole 3, he hit his tee shot close on the 150-meter par 3 and made a birdie. A great stretch from holes 7 to 9 yielded three consecutive birdies, putting him 3 under par after the front nine. Particularly memorable was his birdie on hole 8, where after hitting into a bunker, he executed an excellent sand shot that rolled directly into the hole. He kept the momentum on the back nine, starting with two birdies and finishing with birdies on holes 16 and 17, ending the round 7 under par and entering the rest of the week in 5th place.

Thomas Rosenmüller had a quieter round. He also started with a single bogey but made a birdie on hole 9 to reach even par after nine holes. Birdies on holes 11 and 17 helped him finish with a 70 and 55th place.

Jeremy Paul’s round began on the back nine, but the front nine challenged him. After three birdies and one bogey, three consecutive bogeys on holes 2, 4, and 6 pushed him back. A birdie on hole 7 led to an even par round and a tie for 87th place.

Matti Schmid also started on the back nine and made three birdies on holes 10, 13, and 3 but could not overcome four bogeys due to inconsistent putting, finishing at +1
