TGL: Boston Common Golf Dominates The Bay Golf Club with Record 9-1 Victory

Boston Common Golf continues their dominance in the second TGL season, securing the top spot with the highest win of the season. McIlroy and Thorbjornsen shine while The Bay struggles with jetlag and penalties.

On Monday evening, Boston Common Golf demonstrated their title ambitions impressively at the SoFi Center. In Match 6 of the second TGL season, the team led by Rory McIlroy swept The Bay Golf Club off the course with a 9-1 victory. This commanding win moves Boston undefeated (2-0-0) to first place in the SoFi Cup standings, tying with defending champion Atlanta Drive GC. For The Bay Golf Club, the defeat marks a disappointing start to the season with a record of 0-2-0.

Close Start Turns into Disaster

The duel appeared tightly contested at the beginning with a 1:1 tie after two holes. However, from that point forward, the match was defined by two key factors: Boston’s long drives and The Bay’s penalties. The Bay lost four points to Boston after finding the penalty areas on holes 1, 5, 12, and 13. Especially painful was losing their ‘Team Hole’ at hole 9, becoming the first team this TGL season to lose their own team hole when Wyndham Clark missed a birdie putt from about 1.5 meters.

McIlroy and Thorbjornsen in Top Form at TGL

Boston Common Golf was full of highlights. Rory McIlroy broke several distance records off the tee, hitting the ball 327 meters at hole 10, surpassing the previous hole record by nearly 15 meters. He also set a personal best with 326.5 meters at hole 4. After the match, McIlroy praised his young teammate: ‘Michael was a fantastic addition to the team and really, really adapted easily to this style of golf.’ Michael Thorbjornsen continued to show nerve on the greens, improving his singles record to 3-0-1 and delivering decisive moments with eagle and birdie putts, expressing that he is simply enjoying playing good golf without overthinking the scoring.

Frustration and Fatigue for The Bay

For The Bay Golf Club, it was an evening to forget. Shane Lowry, visibly affected by travel fatigue, candidly shared his state: ‘I’m pretty tired… I spent 17 hours on a plane in the last 24 hours.’ Lowry summed up the team’s mood: ‘It wasn’t great, was it? We just didn’t play very well. We fell behind early and for some reason, most of the night it felt like we were in a bad position.’ Despite the loss, there was a small bright spot when Wyndham Clark set a new TGL record with a massive drive of nearly 340 meters on hole 6. Ultimately, statistics told the story clearly: Boston won 9 holes; The Bay secured just one.
