German Golf Association: “Golf Sparks More Interest Than Ever”

The number of registered golfers in Germany is rising faster than last year, especially among younger people, but golf remains predominantly older.“Golf in Germany is generating more interest today than ever before.” With these words, DGV President Claus M. Kobold announced the growth of registered golfers in Germany at the Deutscher Golf Verband’s annual kickoff. The number of DGV memberships increased by 1.3% to 695,617 registered golfers in member golf courses by September 30, 2025. Golf has been growing almost continuously since 2021. The DGV hopes to surpass the magical mark of 700,000 memberships next year.

Record Number of Golfers in Germany

Notably, the number of golfers aged 19 to 40 is rising, contrary to Germany’s population trend. This trend began last year and continued in 2025, with a 7.45% increase compared to the previous year. While the DGV was puzzled last year about the reasons for this growth, this year they speculate that modern communication methods, digital outreach, and a contemporary golf image are contributing factors, as stated by Achim Battermann, Deputy President of the DGV. Golf clubs engaging through social media and an improved image of golf in Germany may be key drivers of this trend.

Golfers Aged 60+ Still Dominate

However, golf remains predominantly played by older people, with the largest age group being 60 and above, representing 46.9% of all registered golfers in Germany. This is lower compared to Denmark (47.4%) and France (49.4%), but older compared to markets like Sweden (31.91%) or Spain (37.18%). The DGV views this as a healthy balance, given the growth of younger players. Alexander Klose, Board Member for Services, Law and Communications, noted that loyal golfers remain active for decades, while a younger generation is emerging. Nevertheless, challenges remain as nearly as many golfers leave the sport in the 40 to 60 age group as join in the younger age groups.

Gender Disparity and Club Numbers

The sport remains male-dominated. Despite overall growth in golfers, female golfer numbers are declining, with slower growth among women aged 19 to 40 and a decrease in girls under 18, while boys under 18 are slightly increasing. Membership growth is uneven across golf courses, and the number of golf courses in Germany has decreased by five to 721. This reduction has various reasons beyond profitability concerns.
