Hot Tips for Cold Golf Days – Stay Warm and Mobile on the Course

Golfing in the cold? No problem. Just avoid common mistakes with pro tips for staying warm on chilly golf days.No doubt, golfing in autumn and winter feels different than in summer. The ball doesn’t fly as usual in cold weather, padded clothing makes a smooth swing nearly impossible, and footing can be slippery on soon-to-freeze ground. But despite the winter chill, no one needs to skip their golf round. Being properly equipped and prepared is key.

Warming Up Is Essential

Ralf Schwarz, a coach for the Bavarian Golf Association living in the Allgäu region where it’s often frosty from October to April, explains: “When it’s cold, golfers move less freely.” Especially then, a thorough warm-up of at least ten minutes is vital. “Otherwise, muscles don’t warm properly, increasing risk of injuries,” says the PGA professional. Strains are common in these conditions. Also, stimulate your cardiovascular system by jogging in place and swinging your arms to get your body—and fingers and toes—warm right from the start. Ralf advises: “Keep moving constantly. That helps a lot.”

Top Winter Golf Tips at a Glance

  • Choose a softer ball. It compensates for shell hardening caused by cold and offers better feel. Keeping the ball occasionally warm in your pocket between holes enhances this effect.
  • Opt for a longer club. If you’d normally use a 7-iron, try a 6-iron since balls fly shorter in cold.
  • Wear layers instead of one thick garment or too few. You can always remove layers but not add what you don’t have.
  • Bring a warm drink like tea with a bit of sugar or broth on your round.
  • Carry hand warmers in your pockets. They’re affordable and keep you warm for around two hours.
  • Carry your golf bag instead of pushing it to keep your circulation going and stay warm.
  • Keep expectations realistic. Balls don’t fly as far in cold, so don’t expect a scoring highlight. Use winter rounds to try things you usually wouldn’t.

Right Gear: Layer Up and Use Windbreakers

Don’t let the cold deter you—proper gear is crucial. Since most body heat escapes through your head, a cozy warm hat is as important as clubs and balls on the course. Schwarz recommends lightweight, insulating functional wear like ski underwear, topped with a windproof layer rather than a bulky winter jacket.
