Not all PGA Tour stars support Brooks Koepka’s upcoming comeback. One player shares mixed feelings of joy and frustration, criticizing the circumstances.
Brooks Koepka’s return to the PGA Tour has sparked not only support but also criticism. While Tiger Woods recently expressed positive views about Koepka’s comeback, Wyndham Clark holds a more conflicted opinion about the developments surrounding LIV Golf players rejoining the PGA Tour.
A PGA Tour Comeback with a Bitter Aftertaste
Speaking on PGA Tour Sirius XM Radio, 2023 U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark did not fully endorse Koepka’s return. He finds himself torn between sporting respect, personal sympathy, and structural criticism of the PGA Tour’s approach to LIV Golf returnees.
Clark generally welcomes Koepka’s comeback: “At the end of the day, a player like Brooks makes the Tour better,” he said. He also noted that he, as a player, can benefit from the return of a top competitor.
However, Clark is also accompanied by a sense of frustration. The reason: Koepka benefitted financially from LIV Golf and is now allowed to rejoin the PGA Tour without the usual suspension due to a special regulation. For Clark, this is hard to reconcile, especially regarding players who have remained loyal to the Tour during difficult times and personal performance slumps.
Special Rules Equals Special Treatment?
Although Koepka must donate five million dollars to charity as part of his return conditions and is excluded from bonus payments and sponsor exemptions at signature events, he can compete on the PGA Tour immediately. Clark’s criticism targets the lack of sporting and partly financial consequences. This initially gives him the impression that Koepka is positioned to benefit both financially and competitively from LIV Golf and the PGA Tour simultaneously.
“I don’t really know how to feel,” Clark openly admitted. “Maybe I would have liked greater consequences.” At the same time, he acknowledges that the measures introduced are reasonable overall, especially praising the firm deadline set for potential LIV returnees.
I want to thank my family and my team for their continued support throughout every step of my professional career. When I was a child, I always dreamed about competing on the @PGATOUR, and I am just as excited today to announce that I am returning to the PGA TOUR. Being closer to… pic.twitter.com/SEIehuZN7O
