Atlanta Drive GC wins a thrilling TGL match 7-4 against The Bay GC, maintaining their unbeaten streak.
Before the third match of the new TGL season, roles were clearly defined: defending champions Atlanta Drive GC arrived at the SoFi Center with a first win under their belt, while The Bay Golf Club was set for their season debut. After 15 holes, the final score was 7-4. The crucial lead was secured by the team around Billy Horschel, Patrick Cantlay, and substitute Chris Gotterup, especially in the singles format where Atlanta earned four of six possible points. Following a balanced start, Atlanta took control from hole 11 onwards. ‘We come in here, train, play our game – it fits,’ said Horschel. Despite the absence of the injured Justin Thomas, Atlanta remains strong, showcasing impressive squad depth. This marked their ninth win in the last ten TGL matches — a remarkable record.
TGL: Gotterup Brings Atlanta Back Into Play
For the second consecutive time, Chris Gotterup appeared on Atlanta’s scoreboard and was again a key factor. After a point-less start on hole 1, he put Atlanta ahead with a nine-foot par putt on hole 2. The Bay responded immediately on the following holes with hammer plays, shifting the score to 1-2 against Atlanta. The first significant momentum shift occurred on hole 6, named ‘Alpine.’ After The Bay had leveled the match, Gotterup chipped in for an eagle, bringing Atlanta back on par. Even without The Bay using their hammer, the emotional effect was palpable: a tie game. ‘I try to see as much as possible on the greens – with all this lighting it’s not easy,’ Gotterup later commented. ‘But making such putts teaches you what to expect.’
