Rory McIlroy Considers Major Iron Set Change in New Year

Rory McIlroy tests new TaylorMade irons to start the new year. Is he changing his entire iron set for the first time since 2017?

After a dream year in 2025, Rory McIlroy is already focused on maintaining his success in the coming year. A significant change might be underway in the 36-year-old’s club selection as he tests a new set of irons at TGL. Last year, he switched drivers and golf balls, and now another major adjustment could be next.

TaylorMade P7CB Replaces Rors Proto

Since 2017, McIlroy has used TaylorMade’s Rors Proto irons, but during the Crown Australian Open, he switched his 4 to 6 irons to the TaylorMade P7CBs. It seems the rest of the set might follow, as a video from his TGL team before his game at Boston Common Golf Club in early 2026 showed McIlroy stating, ‘I’m currently testing a new iron set, which I am really excited about.’

Soon after the video release, Boston Common won their TGL opener against Los Angeles Golf Club, with McIlroy using TaylorMade P7CB irons from 4 to 9 and sticking with Project X 7.0 shafts. The P7CB irons offer more forgiveness than his previous Rors Proto blades, providing greater playing flexibility.

Whether this will be a permanent switch remains to be seen, but for McIlroy, it would mark the first time the five-time major champion does not use blade irons in his set.

Rory McIlroy’s First Start in Dubai

McIlroy’s official season kickoff will be the Dubai Invitational from January 15 to 18, offering a closer look at his bag and iron choice for the upcoming year.

His new TaylorMade Qi4D driver and fairway woods appear set to remain in his bag following their debut usage at the HSBC Championship last November.
