Atlanta Drive GC wins an exciting TGL match 7:4 against The Bay GC and remains undefeated.
The roles were clearly defined before the third match of the new TGL season: defending champion Atlanta Drive GC came to the SoFi Center with an opening victory, while The Bay Golf Club was making its debut in the new season. After 15 holes, the final score was 7:4. The decisive lead was secured by the team around Billy Horschel, Patrick Cantlay and substitute Chris Gotterup, often in the singles format, where Atlanta collected four of six possible points. After an even start, Atlanta started to assert themselves from hole 11. ‘We come in here, train, play our game – it fits,’ said Horschel. Even without the injured Justin Thomas, the team performed well, demonstrating the depth of the roster. It was the ninth win in the last ten TGL games – an impressive record.
TGL: Gotterup brings Atlanta back in the game
For the second consecutive match, Chris Gotterup scored for Atlanta and was a key factor again. After a scoreless start on hole 1, he put Atlanta ahead with a par putt from just under nine feet on hole 2. The Bay responded immediately on the next holes by using the hammer, leading Atlanta 1:2. The first clear momentum shift came on hole 6, called \”Alpine.\” After The Bay had equalized, Gotterup made a chip-in eagle to bring Atlanta back on par. Even though The Bay did not use the hammer, the emotional impact was significant: the match was tied. ‘I try to see as much as possible on the greens – with all the lighting, it is not easy,’ Gotterup later said. ‘But when you make such putts, you know what to expect.’
