The Trump administration cancels leases of Washington, D.C.’s public golf courses amid disputes over investments and future plans.
The government of U.S. President Donald Trump has terminated the lease agreements for the three public golf courses located in the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. These historic courses are Rock Creek, Langston, and East Potomac, all situated within the city. Particularly notable is East Potomac, prominently located within sight of the Washington Monument, offering players stunning views of the surrounding landscape. This decision to end the leases reflects the president’s broader pattern of prioritizing his brand and vision over urban infrastructure in the capital.
NLT Invested Millions in Renovation and Modernization
The National Links Trust (NLT) has operated these three courses for around five years as a nonprofit organization, investing approximately $8.5 million into their renovation. A comprehensive renovation plan was submitted, and architects Gil Hanse, Tom Doak, and Beau Welling were engaged to lead the courses’ restorations, offering their expertise pro bono. These upgrades doubled both rounds played and revenues during NLT’s management.
As early as mid-December 2025, Donald Trump threatened to terminate the NLT’s leases for these public courses, alleging breaches of terms. The NLT denied knowledge of any contractual violations and expressed surprise at the administration’s threats. In October, the government controversially dumped demolition debris from the White House East Wing onto East Potomac’s grounds.
Trump Administration Implements Lease Terminations
On Wednesday, the U.S. government enacted its threat, ending the 50-year lease agreements with NLT due to alleged failures in required investments and breaches of contract terms. The courses are mostly located on National Park Service lands, under the Department of the Interior.
The National Links Trust expressed deep disappointment over the decision, emphasizing it had fulfilled all contractual obligations over five years to ensure a strong future for public golf in Washington, D.C. The NLT strongly disputes the government’s claim of contract violations. The Interior Department responded that the Trump administration is proud to serve the American people and to work with partners sharing the same goals.
East Potomac in Focus of Trump’s Golf Vision
East Potomac has become a centerpiece in the president’s vision, thanks to its breathtaking views of the Washington Monument and Potomac River, with its renovation seen as a model for democratizing golf nationwide. Sources familiar with government plans reveal Trump intends to transform East Potomac into a championship venue capable of hosting professional tournaments, potentially including the Ryder Cup. However, the next available Ryder Cup slot is 2041, with the 2037 event scheduled at Congressional Golf Club near the capital. Trump plans to replace the volunteer architects with Tom Fazio, a longtime associate.
In December, the president assured Washington, D.C. citizens would continue to enjoy discounted rates at any Trump-designed courses, though this claim contrasts with the expensive nature of his 12 privately operated global golf courses.
