Rory McIlroy: Significant Change in Golf Star’s Bag?

Rory McIlroy tests new TaylorMade irons at the start of the year. Is he changing his entire iron set for the first time since 2017?

After an outstanding year in 2025, Rory McIlroy is already focused on making the next year equally successful. A change might be coming in the 36-year-old’s club selection as he tests a new set of irons at TGL. Last year, he already switched his driver and golf balls, and now another significant change could be on the horizon.

TaylorMade P7CB Replacing Rors Proto

Since 2017, McIlroy has used irons from the TaylorMade Rors Proto series, but at the Crown Australian Open, he swapped his 4 to 6 irons for TaylorMade P7CBs. It now seems the rest of the set might follow, as before his game at Boston Common Golf Club in early 2026, his TGL team released a video where he was asked, ‘What is the most important thing you’re working on right now?’ The 36-year-old responded, ‘I’m currently trying out a new set of irons, which I’m really excited about.’

Shortly after the video release, Boston Common played its TGL opener against the Los Angeles Golf Club and won. McIlroy used TaylorMade P7CB irons from 4 to 9 and retained the Project X 7.0 shaft. The P7CB irons are more forgiving than his previous Rors Proto clubs and provide more margin for error in his shots.

Whether this will become a permanent switch to the P7CB irons remains to be seen, but it would mark a significant change in McIlroy’s game. It will be the first time the five-time major winner uses no blade irons in his set.

McIlroy to Start Season in Dubai

McIlroy will officially kick off his season at the Dubai Invitational from January 15 to 18, giving a clearer look at his bag and iron choice for the upcoming year.

His new TaylorMade Qi4D driver and fairway woods are expected to remain in his bag next year after first using them at the HSBC Championship in November.
