Rory McIlroy Considers Major Iron Change in New Season Setup

Rory McIlroy tests new TaylorMade irons early in the year. Is he set to change his entire iron set for the first time since 2017?

Following a dream year in 2025, Rory McIlroy is already looking to replicate his success in the upcoming season. A significant change may be on the horizon regarding the 36-year-old’s club selection, as he is currently testing a new set of irons at the TGL. Last year, he already switched his driver and golf balls, and now another notable update might be coming.

TaylorMade P7CB Instead of Rors Proto

McIlroy has used the TaylorMade Rors Proto irons since 2017, but at the Crown Australian Open, he switched his 4- to 6-irons to TaylorMade P7CBs. It now seems the rest of the set is following suit, after his TGL team released a video before his game at Boston Common Golf Club in early 2026. When asked what he was working on, the 36-year-old responded, “I’m trying out a new iron set, which I’m very excited about right now.”

Shortly after the video release, McIlroy played for Boston Common in their TGL debut match against the Los Angeles Golf Club, which they won. He used TaylorMade P7CB irons from 4 to 9 and stuck with the Project X 7.0 shaft. The P7CB irons are more forgiving than his previous Rors Proto clubs, offering him greater flexibility in his shots.

Whether the switch to the P7CB irons will be permanent remains to be seen, but for McIlroy, this would mark a notable change in his game. It would be the first time the five-time major winner uses anything other than blade irons in his set.

McIlroy’s Dubai Season Opener

McIlroy will officially kick off his season at the Dubai Invitational from January 15 to 18, providing further insight into his bag and iron selection for the coming year.

His new TaylorMade Qi4D driver and fairway woods are expected to remain in his bag for the next season, having been first used at the HSBC Championship in November.
