Donald Trump Ends Leases of Public Golf Courses in Washington, D.C.

The Trump administration cancels leases of Washington, D.C.’s public golf courses amid disputes over investments and future plans.

The US President Donald Trump’s government announced the termination of lease agreements for three historic public golf courses in the capital city—Rock Creek, Langston, and East Potomac. East Potomac, notably located with a clear view of the Washington Monument, offers players stunning views of the surrounding landscape. This decision reflects the President’s pattern of prioritizing his brand and vision over the urban infrastructure in the nation’s capital.

NLT Invested Millions in Renovation and Modernization

The National Links Trust (NLT), a nonprofit organization, has managed these courses for about five years, reportedly investing $8.5 million into their restoration. A comprehensive renovation plan was presented, with golf architects Gil Hanse, Tom Doak, and Beau Welling volunteering their expertise to lead the projects. Due to modernization efforts, the NLT doubled both the number of rounds played and revenue during operation.

In December 2025, Donald Trump threatened to terminate the NLT’s leases, alleging breaches of agreements. The NLT denied knowledge of any contract violations and expressed confusion over the government’s threats. Earlier in October, the government even deposited debris from the White House East Wing demolition onto East Potomac grounds.

Trump Administration Executes Termination of 50-Year Leases

On Wednesday, the government followed through on its threat, ending the 50-year leases with the NLT for failing to make required investments and meet contract terms. These courses are largely on National Park Service land under the Interior Department.

The NLT expressed deep disappointment over the decision, emphasizing their fulfillment of contractual obligations and commitment to public golf in Washington, D.C. The Interior Department responded by stating the administration is proud to serve the American people and work with partners sharing the same goals.

East Potomac in Focus of Trump’s Golf Vision

East Potomac has become central to the President’s plans. With its breathtaking views of the Washington Monument and Potomac River, its renovation is seen as a potential model for democratizing golf nationwide. However, sources familiar with the administration’s intentions reveal Trump plans to convert East Potomac into a championship course capable of hosting professional tournaments, possibly including the Ryder Cup. The next available Ryder Cup date is in 2041, with the 2037 event scheduled at Congressional Golf Club nearby. The plan involves replacing the volunteer architects with Tom Fazio, who has longstanding ties to Trump.

In December, the President promised DC residents discounted play on a Trump-designed course, contradicting the high prices at his twelve privately-operated golf clubs worldwide.
