Donald Trump cancels leases of public golf courses in Washington, D.C.

The Trump administration cancels lease agreements of public golf courses in Washington, D.C., citing investments and future plans.

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump announced the termination of lease agreements for three historic public golf courses in the nation’s capital: Rock Creek, Langston, and East Potomac. Notably, East Potomac, located prominently near the Washington Monument, offers players stunning views of the surrounding landscape. This decision reflects the president’s pattern of prioritizing his brand and vision over urban infrastructure in Washington, D.C.

NLT invested millions in renovation and modernization

The National Links Trust (NLT), a nonprofit organization operating these courses for about five years, claims to have invested $8.5 million in renovations. They presented a comprehensive restoration plan and engaged golf architects Gil Hanse, Tom Doak, and Beau Welling to lead these efforts, who volunteered their expertise. As a result, the NLT doubled both rounds played and revenue during their operation.

In mid-December 2025, Donald Trump threatened to terminate NLT’s leases over alleged contract violations, which NLT denies, expressing confusion over the government’s claims. In October, debris from the White House East Wing demolition was dumped on the East Potomac grounds by the government.

Trump administration enforces termination of 50-year leases

On Wednesday, the administration executed its threat, terminating the 50-year leases due to NLT’s failure to meet investment commitments and contract terms. These courses primarily occupy National Park Service land under the Department of the Interior.

The NLT expressed deep disappointment over the decision, stating their full compliance with contractual obligations to ensure a bright future for public golf in Washington, D.C. They fundamentally dispute the government’s claim of breaches. The Interior Department replied that the Trump administration is proud to serve the American people and collaborate with partners sharing the same goals.

East Potomac at the center of Trump’s golf vision

East Potomac has gained particular attention; its renovation is viewed as a model for democratizing golf nationwide. However, sources familiar with the administration’s plans suggest Trump intends to convert East Potomac into a championship course capable of hosting professional tournaments, possibly including the Ryder Cup. The next available Ryder Cup slot is not until 2041, with the 2037 event set at Congressional Golf Club near Washington, D.C. Trump plans to replace the three volunteer architects with Tom Fazio, known for his longtime professional ties to the president.

In December, Trump promised that Washington residents would continue to have discounted access on a Trump-designed course, though this contradicts the high prices at his dozen other private golf properties worldwide.
