Donald Trump Terminates Leases of Public Golf Courses in Washington, D.C.

The Trump administration terminates leases of public golf courses in Washington, D.C., citing investment and future plans as points of contention.

The government of U.S. President Donald Trump announced the termination of leases for the three public golf courses in the nation’s capital: Rock Creek, Langston, and East Potomac. East Potomac, notably, offers players an excellent view of the surrounding landscape with its prominent location near the Washington Monument. This decision reflects the president’s pattern of prioritizing his brand and vision over urban infrastructure in the capital.

NLT Invested Millions in Renovation and Modernization

The National Links Trust (NLT), a nonprofit organization operating these courses for about five years, has reportedly invested $8.5 million into renovations. Comprehensive renovation plans were prepared, with golf architects Gil Hanse, Tom Doak, and Beau Welling appointed to lead the projects, offering their expertise pro bono. These investments have doubled both the number of rounds played and revenue during operation.

In mid-December 2025, Donald Trump threatened to terminate the leases of these public courses, alleging that NLT violated terms of the lease agreement. NLT denied knowledge of any breaches and expressed confusion over the government’s threats. Additionally, in October, government officials dumped debris from the demolished East Wing of the White House onto East Potomac’s grounds.

Trump Administration Enforces Termination of 50-Year Leases

On Wednesday, the administration followed through on the threat, ending the 50-year leases due to alleged failure by NLT to make required investments and violations of lease terms. The courses are largely located on National Park Service land, managed by the Department of the Interior.

The National Links Trust expressed deep disappointment with the decision, stating that since taking over the courses five years ago, they have fulfilled all contractual obligations to secure the future of public golf in Washington, D.C. NLT fundamentally disagrees with the government’s claim of contract violations. The Department of the Interior responded that the Trump administration is proud to serve the American people and work with partners who share the same goals.

East Potomac at the Center of Trump’s Golf Vision

East Potomac has become a focal point of the president’s plans. With its stunning views of the Washington Monument and Potomac River, the site is seen as a model for democratizing golf nationwide. However, according to sources familiar with the administration’s intentions, Trump plans to convert East Potomac into a championship course capable of hosting professional tournaments, possibly including the Ryder Cup. The next available Ryder Cup slot is not until 2041, with the 2037 event already booked at Congressional Golf Club near the capital. Trump’s plan involves replacing the three volunteer architects with Tom Fazio, a golf course designer long connected professionally to the president.

In December, Trump promised that residents of Washington, D.C., would continue to enjoy discounted play at a Trump-designed course on the site. This pledge contrasts with Trump’s twelve privately owned golf courses worldwide, which are among the most expensive in the industry.
