Will LIV Golf earn OWGR points soon? Plus McIlroy’s ambitions, Donald’s thanks, Henseleit’s wedding and Couples’ new look.
Rory McIlroy has capped off what he calls the best year of his professional golf career, but the 36-year-old isn’t resting on his laurels. After winning the Masters and completing the career Grand Slam, triumphing at the Irish Open, and securing a Ryder Cup victory on away soil, McIlroy was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year. Yet, he’s already looking ahead: “I don’t know what I’ll do in 2026 to top this, but I’ll try. There’s still a lot more to achieve,” he said.
Among his goals is an eighth Race to Dubai title, which would tie him with Colin Montgomerie’s record. “I still feel like I have a few good years left. Knock on wood, I’ve stayed injury-free. And the drive to improve is still there.”
Just a day later, McIlroy was spotted ringside at the boxing match between Anthony Joshua and Jake Paul in Miami, where he also spoke to the media.
OWGR and LIV Golf: A New Opportunity?
The LIV Golf League is renewing efforts to gain recognition from the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). Trevor Immelman, who chairs the OWGR board, confirmed ongoing discussions with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil. “We’re working closely to find a solution. I think there’s a chance,” Immelman said. LIV plans to switch to 72-hole events and expand its field, aligning more with OWGR standards. “Golf is a meritocracy,” Immelman emphasized. “You earn your place and fight to keep it. That’s the perspective we’re helping LIV understand.”
Team of the Year: Donald and McIlroy Honored
At the SPOTY awards, McIlroy wasn’t the only golfer recognized. The European Ryder Cup team, captained by Luke Donald, was named Team of the Year. McIlroy accepted the award alongside teammate Tommy Fleetwood, while others joined virtually. Donald expressed his gratitude via social media, celebrating the team’s historic win at Bethpage Black.
