McIlroy Eyes More After Historic Year as Sports Personality

Will LIV Golf earn OWGR points soon? Plus McIlroy’s ambitions, Donald’s thanks, Henseleit’s wedding, and Couples’ new look.

Rory McIlroy capped off what he called the best year of his professional career by being named BBC Sports Personality of the Year. But the 36-year-old is far from satisfied. “I don’t know what I’ll do in 2026 to top this, but I’ll try. There’s still a lot more to achieve,” said McIlroy, who completed the career Grand Slam with a Masters win, triumphed at the Irish Open, and helped secure a Ryder Cup victory on away soil. He also hinted at chasing an eighth Race to Dubai title to tie Colin Montgomerie’s record. “I still feel I have a few good years ahead. Thankfully, I’ve stayed injury-free. The drive to improve is still there.”

Just a day later, McIlroy appeared ringside at the Anthony Joshua vs. Jake Paul boxing match in Miami, where Paul suffered a double jaw fracture. McIlroy, ever the media magnet, gave interviews there too.

McIlroy and the TGL Season Opener

It’s unclear whether McIlroy will spend the holidays in Florida or at his new home in England’s Wentworth Estates. What is certain is his participation in the TGL season opener on January 2 with Boston Common. He confirmed that Michael Thorbjornsen will join the team as a substitute for Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama, who will be in Australia and Japan respectively. “Michael will join Keegan and me for our first match,” McIlroy said.

OWGR and LIV Golf: ‘There’s a Chance’

LIV Golf is making another push for inclusion in the Official World Golf Ranking system. Trevor Immelman, chair of the OWGR board since April, revealed ongoing discussions with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil. “We’re working closely to find a solution. I think there’s a chance,” said Immelman. LIV plans to switch to 72-hole events and expand its field. Immelman emphasized the importance of meritocracy in golf: “You have to earn and defend your place on tour. That’s been a key part of our talks with LIV.”

Team of the Year: Donald’s Gratitude

McIlroy wasn’t the only golf winner at the SPOTY awards. Luke Donald’s Ryder Cup squad was named Team of the Year for their victory at Bethpage Black. McIlroy accepted the award alongside teammate Tommy Fleetwood, while others joined virtually. Donald expressed his thanks on social media, representing the team’s collective pride.
