John Daly Eyes Ryder Cup Role, Endorses Tiger Woods as 2027 Captain

John Daly hopes for a Ryder Cup role in 2027 and shares his admiration for Tiger Woods as a potential U.S. team captain.

In an exclusive interview with Hard Rock Bet, John Daly opened up about his dream of being part of the U.S. Ryder Cup team in 2027. Despite being a two-time major champion, Daly remains the only major winner since the Ryder Cup’s inception in 1927 to have never participated in the event. At 59, he acknowledges that his chances of being named captain at Adare Manor in Ireland are slim, but he still holds hope for a role—perhaps as vice-captain.

Tiger Woods as Captain? Daly Thinks Big

“I’d love to be captain one day, but I don’t think it’ll ever happen,” Daly admitted. Still, he didn’t shy away from imagining a scenario where Tiger Woods leads the U.S. team. “Tiger would be an incredible captain,” Daly said. “I’d love to be a vice-captain or just be part of the team in any way.” While Daly’s candidacy may seem unlikely, his presence could inject a relaxed, spirited energy into the squad. “I’d love to share my ideas and hopefully help the guys,” he added. “It would be a dream come true—something I’ve wanted since winning the PGA Championship in 1991.” Daly also expressed frustration at being overlooked for the team in the past, saying he felt he deserved a spot at least twice.

Patriotism Drives Daly’s Ryder Cup Ambitions

Daly’s desire to contribute stems from his deep-rooted patriotism. “I think our team needs to come together more like a family and fully support the United States of America, instead of focusing on personal gains,” he said. “I just want to win the Ryder Cup.” Known for his long drives and colorful personality, Daly remains one of America’s most beloved golfers. His two major titles—the 1991 PGA Championship and the 1995 Open Championship—cemented his place in golf history. Despite his unconventional style, including drinking beer and smoking during tournaments, Daly’s passion for his country and the game is undeniable.
