Will LIV Golf earn OWGR points soon? Plus McIlroy’s ambitions, Donald’s thanks, Henseleit’s wedding and Couples’ new look.
It was arguably the best year of Rory McIlroy’s professional career, yet the 36-year-old shows no signs of slowing down. After being named Sports Personality of the Year, McIlroy declared, “I don’t know what I’ll do in 2026 to top this, but I’ll try. There’s still a lot more to achieve.” His 2025 season included a Masters win to complete the career Grand Slam, a victory at the Irish Open, and a Ryder Cup triumph on foreign soil. Next on his radar? An eighth Race to Dubai title to match Colin Montgomerie’s record. “I still feel I have a few good years ahead. Thankfully, I’ve stayed injury-free, and the drive to improve is still there.”
Just a day later, McIlroy was spotted ringside at the boxing match between Anthony Joshua and Jake Paul in Miami, where Paul suffered a double jaw fracture. Naturally, McIlroy was interviewed there as well.
OWGR and LIV Golf: ‘There’s a Chance’
The LIV Golf League is renewing its push for Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) recognition. Trevor Immelman, who chairs the OWGR board, confirmed ongoing discussions with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil. “Scott, our board, and I are working closely to find a solution. I think there’s a chance,” said Immelman. LIV is reportedly moving to 72-hole events and expanding its field. “The OWGR is a meritocracy. You have to earn and defend your spot on a tour. That’s what makes our sport special. We’ve been helping LIV understand that perspective,” he added.
Team of the Year: Donald’s Gratitude
At the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year awards, McIlroy broke a long-standing drought for golf by winning the individual honor — the first golfer to do so since Nick Faldo in 1989. The European Ryder Cup team, captained by Luke Donald, was also named Team of the Year for their win at Bethpage Black. McIlroy lifted two trophies that night, joined on stage by teammate Tommy Fleetwood, while others sent their thanks via social media. Donald expressed his gratitude on behalf of the team.
