Rory McIlroy Eyes More After Historic Year as Sports Personality

Will LIV Golf earn OWGR points? Plus McIlroy’s ambitions, Donald’s thanks, Henseleit’s wedding and Couples’ new look.

Rory McIlroy capped off what he called the best year of his professional career with the prestigious BBC Sports Personality of the Year award. But the 36-year-old is far from satisfied. “I don’t know what I’ll do in 2026 to top this, but I’ll try. There’s still a lot more to achieve,” said McIlroy, who in 2025 completed the career Grand Slam with a Masters win, claimed the Irish Open, and helped Team Europe secure a Ryder Cup victory on U.S. soil.

One of his next goals? Winning a record-tying eighth Race to Dubai title to match Colin Montgomerie’s Order of Merit tally. “I still feel I have a few good years ahead. Knock on wood, I’ve stayed injury-free. The drive to get better is still there.” Just a day after the award, McIlroy was spotted ringside at the Anthony Joshua vs. Jake Paul boxing match in Miami, where he also fielded media questions.

OWGR and LIV Golf: A New Opportunity?

The LIV Golf League is renewing its push for inclusion in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). Trevor Immelman, who chairs the OWGR board, confirmed ongoing discussions with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil. “We’re working closely to find a solution. I think there’s a chance,” Immelman said. LIV’s move to 72-hole events and plans to expand its field are seen as steps toward meeting OWGR criteria. Immelman emphasized the merit-based nature of the rankings: “You have to earn your spot and fight to keep it. That’s what makes our sport special.”

Team of the Year: Donald’s Gratitude

McIlroy’s big night at the SPOTY awards didn’t end with his individual honor. Team Europe, captained by Luke Donald, was named Team of the Year for their Ryder Cup triumph at Bethpage Black. McIlroy accepted the award alongside teammate Tommy Fleetwood, while others joined virtually. Donald expressed his thanks via social media, celebrating the team’s collective achievement.
