Will LIV Golf earn OWGR points soon? Plus McIlroy’s big year, Donald’s thanks, Henseleit’s wedding and Couples’ new look.
Rory McIlroy capped off what he called the best year of his professional career by being named BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year. But the 36-year-old isn’t resting on his laurels. “I don’t know what I’ll do in 2026 to top this, but I’ll try. There’s still plenty more to achieve,” said McIlroy, who completed the career Grand Slam with a Masters win, triumphed at the Irish Open, and helped Team Europe win the Ryder Cup on U.S. soil. One goal: tying Colin Montgomerie’s record with an eighth Race to Dubai title. “I still feel like I have a few good years ahead. Knock on wood, I’ve stayed injury-free. And the drive to improve is still there.”
Just a day later, McIlroy was spotted ringside at the Anthony Joshua vs. Jake Paul boxing match in Miami, where Paul suffered a double jaw fracture. McIlroy, now a part-time Florida resident, was again in the spotlight.
McIlroy Preps for TGL, Adds Thorbjornsen
Looking ahead to the new season, McIlroy confirmed that Michael Thorbjornsen will join Boston Common Golf as a substitute player for the TGL’s second season starting January 2. With Adam Scott in Australia and Hideki Matsuyama in Japan, Thorbjornsen will team up with McIlroy and Keegan Bradley for the opening match.
OWGR and LIV Golf: ‘There’s a Chance’
LIV Golf is making another push for inclusion in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). Trevor Immelman, who chairs the OWGR board, revealed ongoing talks with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil. “We’re working closely to find a solution, and I think there’s a chance,” said Immelman. LIV plans to switch to 72-hole events and expand its field. “The OWGR is about meritocracy—you earn your spot and fight to keep it. That’s been a key part of our discussions with LIV,” Immelman added.
Donald’s Thanks as Team Europe Wins SPOTY Honor
In addition to McIlroy’s individual award, Team Europe was named Team of the Year for their Ryder Cup victory at Bethpage Black. Luke Donald and Tommy Fleetwood accepted the honor, while the rest of the team joined virtually. Donald expressed his gratitude on social media, celebrating the team’s collective achievement.
