Will LIV Golf earn OWGR points soon? Plus McIlroy’s ambitions, Donald’s thanks, Henseleit’s wedding and Couples’ new look.
It was arguably the best season of Rory McIlroy’s career, but the 36-year-old isn’t resting on his laurels. After being named BBC Sports Personality of the Year, McIlroy declared, “I don’t know what I’ll do in 2026 to top this, but I’ll try. There’s still a lot more to achieve.”
His 2025 campaign included a Masters victory to complete the career Grand Slam, a win at the Irish Open, and a triumphant Ryder Cup performance on foreign soil. Next on his radar? A record-tying eighth Race to Dubai title. “I still feel I have a few good years left. Thankfully, I’ve stayed injury-free, and the motivation to improve is still there.”
Just a day later, McIlroy was spotted ringside at the Anthony Joshua vs. Jake Paul fight in Miami, where he also gave interviews.
OWGR and LIV Golf: ‘There’s a chance’
The LIV Golf League is pushing once again for inclusion in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). Trevor Immelman, who chairs the OWGR board, confirmed ongoing discussions with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil. “We’re working very closely to find a solution. I think there’s a chance,” said Immelman. LIV is reportedly moving to 72-hole events and expanding its field, aligning more closely with OWGR standards. “It’s about meritocracy,” Immelman emphasized. “You have to earn your place and fight to keep it. That’s been a key part of our talks.”
Team of the Year: Luke Donald’s gratitude
McIlroy wasn’t the only one honored at the SPOTY awards. The European Ryder Cup team, captained by Luke Donald, was named Team of the Year after their win at Bethpage Black. McIlroy accepted the award alongside teammate Tommy Fleetwood, while other team members joined virtually. Donald expressed his thanks via social media, celebrating the team’s collective achievement.
