Will LIV Golf earn OWGR points soon? Plus McIlroy’s ambitions, Donald’s thanks, Henseleit’s wedding and Couples’ new look.
Rory McIlroy capped off a career-defining year in 2025 by being named BBC Sports Personality of the Year, but the 36-year-old insists he’s far from satisfied. “I don’t know what I’ll do in 2026 to top this, but I’ll try. There’s still a lot more to achieve,” said McIlroy, following a season that included a Masters victory to complete the career Grand Slam, a win at the Irish Open, and a triumphant Ryder Cup performance on foreign soil.
McIlroy hinted at chasing an eighth Race to Dubai title, which would tie Colin Montgomerie’s record. “I still feel like I have a few good years left. Knock on wood, I’ve stayed injury-free, and the drive to improve is still there.”
Just a day later, McIlroy was spotted ringside at the boxing match between Anthony Joshua and Jake Paul in Miami, where he again shared his thoughts with the media.
OWGR and LIV: ‘There’s a Chance’
The LIV Golf League has renewed efforts to gain recognition from the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). Trevor Immelman, who chairs the OWGR board, confirmed ongoing discussions with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil. “We’re working closely to find a solution. I think there’s a chance,” said Immelman. LIV’s move to 72-hole events and plans to expand their field are steps toward meeting OWGR criteria. “It’s a meritocracy,” Immelman emphasized. “You have to earn your spot and fight to keep it. That’s what we’ve been helping LIV understand.”
Team of the Year: Donald’s Gratitude
McIlroy wasn’t the only one honored at the SPOTY awards. Luke Donald’s Ryder Cup team, victorious at Bethpage Black, was named Team of the Year. McIlroy accepted the award alongside teammate Tommy Fleetwood, while others joined virtually. Captain Donald expressed his thanks on social media, celebrating the team’s collective achievement.
