Will LIV earn OWGR points soon? Plus McIlroy’s ambitions, Donald’s thanks, Henseleit’s wedding and Couples’ new look.
Rory McIlroy capped off a stellar 2025 season with the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, but the 36-year-old insists he’s not done yet. “I don’t know how I’ll top 2025, but I’ll try. There’s still a lot more to achieve,” he said after a year that included a Masters win, completing the career Grand Slam, an Irish Open title, and a Ryder Cup victory on foreign soil. He’s now eyeing an eighth Race to Dubai title to match Colin Montgomerie’s record. “I still feel I’ve got a few good years left. Thankfully, I’ve stayed injury-free and I’m still motivated to improve.”
Just a day later, McIlroy appeared ringside at the Anthony Joshua vs. Jake Paul fight in Miami, where Paul suffered a double jaw fracture. McIlroy, ever the star, was again in the spotlight.
McIlroy and TGL: New Season, New Teammate
With the second season of Tomorrow’s Golf League (TGL) kicking off January 2, McIlroy confirmed that Michael Thorbjornsen will join Boston Common as a reserve. With Hideki Matsuyama in Japan and Adam Scott in Australia, Thorbjornsen will team up with McIlroy and Keegan Bradley for the opener.
OWGR and LIV Golf: ‘There’s a Chance’
LIV Golf’s push for Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points continues. Trevor Immelman, chair of the OWGR board, revealed ongoing discussions with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil. “We’re working closely to find a solution. I think there’s a chance,” said Immelman, noting LIV’s move to 72-hole events and plans to expand fields. “The OWGR is about meritocracy. You earn your place and fight to keep it. That’s been key in our talks with LIV.”
Donald and Team Europe Honored
McIlroy wasn’t the only one celebrating at the SPOTY awards. Team Europe, led by Luke Donald, was named Team of the Year for their Ryder Cup triumph at Bethpage Black. McIlroy accepted the award alongside teammate Tommy Fleetwood, while others joined virtually. Donald expressed his gratitude on social media, representing the team’s appreciation.
