Preferred lies is a winter golf rule allowing players to slightly reposition their ball under specific conditions.
When a golf club enacts a local rule, players may improve the position of their ball within a limited area. In many countries, this rule is commonly applied during the winter season, typically between October 1 and March 31, and often only on closely mown areas.
Preferred Lies – Never Closer to the Hole
The main reasons for allowing preferred lies include adverse weather, soft ground conditions, or to protect the course. When repositioning the ball, it must never be placed closer to the hole. A general guideline is that the ball may be moved the length of a scorecard. However, the exact distance and conditions are determined by the individual club. Before lifting the ball, its position must be marked, and it may be cleaned when lifted. This rule does not apply to rough areas.
Penalties for Incorrect Application
If a player plays the ball from a different spot than allowed under the rule, it is considered “playing from the wrong place” and results in a two-stroke penalty or loss of hole in match play.
Golfers should always check with the club during winter months to see if the preferred lies rule is in effect.
