LIV Golf to Adopt 72-Hole Format Starting in 2026

LIV Golf will expand to a 72-hole format in 2026, aligning with global standards and sparking speculation about new teams.

LIV Golf is entering a new era with a major format change. Starting in the 2026 season, tournaments will shift from 54 to 72 holes, extending events from three to four days. LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil stated, “As we enter our fourth season, the move to 72 holes marks a pivotal new chapter for LIV Golf. It strengthens our league, challenges our elite players, and delivers more of the world-class golf, energy, innovation, and accessibility our global audience craves.”

Since its inception, LIV Golf has held three-day events, a nod to its name—LIV, the Roman numeral for 54. The 2026 season will see events typically run from Thursday to Sunday, mirroring the PGA and DP World Tours. Individual stroke play remains the format for regular season events, with team competitions continuing in parallel. Shotgun starts, a signature of LIV events, will also remain. The format for the season-ending Team Championship is yet to be announced.

Players Welcome the 72-Hole Change

Spanish star Jon Rahm, who joined LIV Golf in late 2023, praised the change: “LIV Golf is a league of players. We are competitors at heart and want every opportunity to test ourselves at the highest level. Moving to 72 holes is a natural evolution—it strengthens the competition, challenges us more, and delivers what fans want.”

Dustin Johnson, captain of 4Aces GC, added, “72 holes just feels more like the big tournaments we all grew up with. I’ve always liked the grind over four rounds—it gives the best players a chance to rise to the top.”

Bryson DeChambeau noted the league’s alignment with global standards: “Moving to 72 holes is a proactive step to align with the globally recognized format. It’s a great evolution of the LIV Golf product, showing the league listens and adapts to create the best experience.”
