Rory McIlroy Reflects on Stellar Year and Eyes More in 2026

Will LIV Golf earn OWGR points soon? Plus McIlroy’s ambitions, Donald’s thanks, Henseleit’s wedding and Couples’ new look.

After being named Sports Personality of the Year, Rory McIlroy declared he’s far from done. Following a career-defining 2025 that included a Masters win, completing the career Grand Slam, an Irish Open victory, and a Ryder Cup triumph abroad, the 36-year-old is already eyeing more. “I don’t know what I’ll do in 2026 to top this, but I’m going to try. There’s still a lot more to achieve,” McIlroy said. One goal: winning a record-tying eighth Race to Dubai title. “I still feel I have a few good years ahead. Thankfully, I’ve stayed injury-free, and the drive to improve is still there.”

Just a day later, McIlroy appeared ringside at the Anthony Joshua vs. Jake Paul fight in Miami, where Paul suffered a double jaw fracture. Of course, McIlroy was asked about his plans there too.

McIlroy and TGL: Ready for 2026

McIlroy is set to debut with Boston Common in the second season of the Tomorrow’s Golf League (TGL) on January 2. He confirmed the addition of Michael Thorbjornsen as a substitute for the team, which includes Keegan Bradley, Adam Scott, and Hideki Matsuyama. “Hideki will be in Japan and Adam in Australia, so Michael will join Keegan and me for the opener,” McIlroy explained.

OWGR and LIV Golf: “There’s a Chance”

LIV Golf is making another push for Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) recognition. Trevor Immelman, chair of the OWGR board since April, revealed ongoing talks with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil. “We’re working closely to find a solution. I think there’s a chance,” Immelman said. LIV plans to switch to 72-hole events and expand its field. Immelman emphasized the importance of meritocracy in golf: “You have to earn your spot and fight to keep it. That’s been a key part of our discussions with LIV.”

Ryder Cup Team of the Year and Donald’s Thanks

McIlroy wasn’t the only golf winner at the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year awards. The European Ryder Cup team, led by Luke Donald, was named Team of the Year after their win at Bethpage Black. McIlroy accepted the award alongside teammate Tommy Fleetwood, while others joined virtually. Donald shared his gratitude on social media, representing the team’s appreciation.
