Justin Thomas Undergoes Back Surgery, to Miss Start of 2026 Season

Justin Thomas has undergone back surgery and will miss the start of the 2026 season. His return date remains uncertain.

Disc Issues Sideline Justin Thomas

Two-time major champion Justin Thomas is set to miss the beginning of the 2026 season after undergoing back surgery. The 32-year-old American announced that he had been dealing with persistent hip pain for several months, which worsened despite taking time off. An MRI revealed a disc issue that required surgical intervention.

“I had a successful microdiscectomy performed yesterday at Hospital for Special Surgery in NY,” Thomas shared on social media. “I’ll be resting over the next few weeks before starting rehab. I have a great team behind me that I fully trust to get me back in better shape than ever.”

Thomas emphasized that he is not setting a specific return date, preferring to focus on a full recovery without pressure.

Strong 2025 Season Cut Short

Ranked eighth in the world, Thomas had been enjoying a strong 2025 season before his injury. He played in 21 PGA Tour events, securing one win, three runner-up finishes, and eight top-10 placements. His last appearance was at the Ryder Cup in late September.

While the timeline for his return remains open, Thomas’s absence will be felt at the start of the new season as he focuses on regaining full health.
