Jeremy Paul opens the Butterfield Bermuda Championship with a solid 69 (-2). Rosenmüller and Schmid sit mid-field.
The PGA Tour heads to Bermuda this week for the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. On the opening day, Germany’s Jeremy Paul carded a 2-under-par 69 on the challenging par-71 course, placing him near the top of the leaderboard. Fellow Germans Thomas Rosenmüller (71) and Matti Schmid (72) had more mixed rounds and find themselves further down the standings. Canada’s Adam Hadwin leads after a 6-under 65, followed by Japan’s Takumi Kanaya and American Braden Thornberry. Due to darkness, several players were unable to finish their rounds and will resume play the following morning.
Strong back nine lifts Jeremy Paul
Jeremy Paul has shown improved form in recent PGA Tour events after a tough mid-season stretch. His first round in Bermuda continued that trend. Despite opening with a bogey, Paul quickly recovered with a birdie on the 11th after a successful up-and-down from the greenside bunker. He then caught fire with birdies on holes 16, 17, and 18 to make the turn at 3-under. A bogey on the par-5 2nd slowed his momentum, but he added another birdie on the 5th. A late bogey on the 8th saw him finish with a 69, placing him T13 at the time, though many players had yet to complete their rounds.
Mixed results for Rosenmüller and Schmid
Thomas Rosenmüller had an up-and-down start to his tournament, finishing with an even-par 71. His front nine included three bogeys and two birdies, with bunker trouble on holes 15 and 16 costing him strokes. He steadied his game on the back nine, adding a birdie on the 7th to balance out his round.
Matti Schmid struggled early with four bogeys on his front nine, offset by a single birdie on the 7th. At +3 through nine holes, he needed a strong finish and delivered with birdies on 15 and 17, closing with a 72 to sit in the middle of the pack.
