Team Europe clinched the World Champions Cup with a dominant final day, powered by strong performances from Cejka and Langer.
Team Europe emerged victorious at the World Champions Cup on the Champions Tour, delivering a commanding performance on the final day. After two closely contested rounds, the Europeans surged ahead in Sunday’s singles matches, collecting an impressive 102.5 points. With a total of 230 points, Europe finished well ahead of Team USA (213.5) and Team International (204.5).
Cejka Leads Early Charge for Team Europe
From the opening day, Europe adapted quickly to the format. Alex Cejka teamed up with Søren Kjeldsen to score 20 points on Thursday, including seven birdies in the best-ball format. With Bernhard Langer sidelined due to illness, Cejka stepped up as a key contributor, maintaining momentum through Friday despite pressure from Stewart Cink and Jason Caron of Team USA.
On Sunday, Cejka set the tone early in the singles, scoring 12.5 points with precise approaches, solid putting, and a crucial up-and-down. Kjeldsen followed with a blazing start—five consecutive birdies—adding another 12 points to the team’s tally.
Langer Returns with Impact
After a cautious start on Friday, Bernhard Langer made a powerful return on Sunday. The 66-year-old went six under par over the first five holes, showcasing his enduring skill on the Champions Tour. His pinpoint approaches, a key sand save, and a closing tap-in secured 12 points and reinforced Europe’s dominance.
Team USA’s Jason Caron was the event’s top scorer with 60.5 points, while Steven Alker gave Team International a brief Sunday morning boost with 13.5 points. However, Europe consistently responded at critical moments.
Ryder Cup captains Darren Clarke, Thomas Bjørn, and Colin Montgomerie laid the groundwork in the morning session, each leading their group and combining for 34.5 points. Their efforts set the tone for the day, and Europe never looked back, sealing a well-deserved victory with 102.5 points on the final day.
