Sport, nature and luxury: Why Quinta do Lago is more than just a golf resort and why a visit to Portugal’s coast is worth it.
Anyone familiar with the Algarve knows that sunshine, beaches and golf courses are almost a given. Yet Quinta do Lago stands out—not because of one single highlight, but because of its overall concept. Located within the Ria Formosa Natural Park, the resort spans over 2,000 hectares of protected landscape, combined with modern infrastructure and facilities usually found in elite international training centers. This unique blend makes it appealing whether you’re here to play golf, train or simply unwind.
Visiting for a project, I had a packed schedule, but it didn’t take long to absorb the atmosphere. Everything is close together, yet nothing feels cramped. Many areas are open, allowing the natural park to be more than just a backdrop—it becomes a constant companion.
Golf in Quinta do Lago: Three Courses, Three Personalities
Quinta do Lago is renowned for its golf facilities. The South Course is the most immediately impressive—no gimmicks, just honest, precise golf. The fairways are nestled between pine trees and the natural park, and it’s easy to see why this course has hosted the Portuguese Open multiple times.
The North Course is more modern in design, featuring alders, pines, expansive bunkers and clearly defined landing zones. The influence of Beau Welling and Paul McGinley is evident. It’s a structured, strategic course that demands thoughtful play.
Laranjal is different—more open, brighter, almost Mediterranean in feel. Built on a former orange grove, its Bermuda grass fairways are challenging yet fair. Many guests say Laranjal becomes their surprise favorite thanks to its playful character.
