The GOAT Wants a Home Game: Would Woods Decline Ryder Cup 2027?

Speculations around Tiger as captain, Scheffler injury-free, fun with DP World Tour and the Kordas. The Back Nine.

At the start of the year, a bit of speculation is allowed. Some disguise it as predictions, a very popular discipline in early January. The colleagues from the renowned US portal The Fried Egg have boldly suggested for the upcoming golf year that the PGA of America will offer Tiger Woods the role of captain for the 2027 Ryder Cup excursion to Ireland, but the 50-year-old politely declines. He prefers to lead the US team when it is a home game. The GOAT as skipper in a continental event on his home turf: this would likely break all fan hype records golf has seen in the USA.

Anyway: it would be Woods’ second refusal after he already declined for 2025 at Bethpage Black. This led to the appointment of Keegan Bradley, who has since carried the trauma of losses from Medinah 2012 and omission for Rome 2023. It’s a understandable decision by Tiger. Why give up the home advantage – statistically non-existent but emotionally significant – and risk tarnishing his sporting reputation with an away command mission where chances are slim? The Americans last won in Europe in 1993 at The Belfry in England.

Moreover, his likely opponent at Adare Manor could be Luke Donald, who has outwitted the US skipper twice before in style. This again poses a dilemma for the PGA of America as few others are ready for the captaincy role. Hopefully, it won’t be Keegan Bradley again – Davis Love III, a Medinah loser, was given a second chance in 2016 at home. Well, a little speculation is allowed… The ‘Fried Egg’ team also suggested others:

McIlroy and Teammate Keegan: It’s Complicated

An awkward situation: Boston Common recently won their first match in the Tomorrow’s Golf League, thanks in part to the putts by Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama substitute Michael Thorbjornsen. However, last Friday at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, the ‘Frogs’ faced not only Los Angeles but also a tense internal team situation. Rory McIlroy and fellow Boston Common teammate Keegan Bradley had to put on a good face during the indoor spectacle, despite a complex relationship since the Bethpage Ryder Cup.
