Atlanta Drive GC wins an exciting TGL match 7-4 against The Bay GC, maintaining their unbeaten record.
Before the third match of the new TGL season, roles were clearly defined: defending champion Atlanta Drive GC came to the SoFi Center with a win under their belt, while The Bay Golf Club was making its season debut. After 15 holes, the final score was 7-4. The decisive advantage was gained by the team around Billy Horschel, Patrick Cantlay, and substitute Chris Gotterup, especially in the singles format, where Atlanta earned four of six possible points. After an even start, Atlanta made a strong push from hole 11. “We come in here, train, play our game – it fits,” said Horschel. Even without the injured Justin Thomas, Atlanta’s depth shows. This was the ninth win in their last ten TGL matches – an impressive record.
TGL: Gotterup Brings Atlanta Back Into The Game
For the second consecutive time, Chris Gotterup made the scoreboard for Atlanta and was again a key factor. After a scoreless start on hole 1, he put Atlanta ahead with a par putt from nearly nine feet on hole 2. The Bay responded immediately by using the Hammer on the following holes, taking a 2-1 lead. The first major momentum shift came on hole 6, known as “Alpine”. After The Bay had leveled, Gotterup chipped in for Eagle to tie the match. Even though The Bay didn’t use the Hammer, the emotional impact was felt: the match was tied. “I try to read the greens as much as possible – with all the lighting it’s not easy,” Gotterup said later. “But when you make shots like that, you know what to expect.”
