Atlanta Drive GC wins an exciting TGL match 7-4 against The Bay GC, maintaining their unbeaten record.
The roles before the third match of the new TGL season were clearly defined: defending champions Atlanta Drive GC came into the SoFi Center riding a first match victory, while The Bay Golf Club was making its season debut. After 15 holes played, the final score was 7-4. The decisive advantage was secured by the team around Billy Horschel, Patrick Cantlay and substitute Chris Gotterup mainly in the singles format where Atlanta collected four of six possible points. After an even start, Atlanta took control from hole 11 onwards. “We come in here, train, play our game – it fits,” said Horschel. Despite the absence of the injured Justin Thomas, the team performed well, demonstrating the depth of their squad. It was the ninth win in their last ten TGL matches – an impressive record.
TGL: Gotterup Brings Atlanta Back Into the Game
For the second consecutive match, Chris Gotterup appeared on Atlanta’s scoreboard, again playing a key role. After a scoreless start on hole 1, he put Atlanta ahead on hole 2 with a par putt from nearly nine feet. The Bay responded immediately by using the hammer on the next holes, taking a 2-1 lead. The first clear momentum shift came on hole 6, known as “Alpine.” After The Bay had leveled the match, Gotterup holed a chip-in eagle to bring Atlanta back on par. Although The Bay did not use their hammer, the emotional impact was notable: tie game. “I try to see as much as possible on the greens – with all this lighting it’s not easy,” Gotterup commented later. “But when you make putts like that, you know what to expect.”
