Golf pro gives insights: This is how expensive a tournament week on the Korn Ferry Tour is

How much does a week on the Korn Ferry Tour cost – and what’s left over at the end? American golfer James Nicholas provides honest insights into his tournament weeks on Instagram and in a video format and shows: The road to the PGA Tour is not only tough in sporting terms, but also financially demanding.

Nicholas played strongly at the Argentina Open and finished tied 29th (T-29th). This earned him prize money of 6,575 US dollars – sounds solid, but this is offset by 5,825 US dollars in expenses. The flight to South America alone cost him 1,850 dollars and the hotel was 1,400 dollars. Further costs were incurred for meals, transportation and the caddie. Because he made the cut, he paid his caddie an additional bonus of 460 dollars. The bottom line was that he only made a profit of 750 dollars.

Korn Ferry Tour: Top 30 finish needed to just cover the costs

Just a few weeks later, the reality of many professionals set in: Nicholas missed the cut in Sarasota – and therefore received no prize money. To save costs, he traveled by car and stayed with friends for free. He was therefore able to do without hotel costs. Nevertheless, his expenses amounted to 2,050 dollars. Most of this was accounted for by the basic caddie allowance of 1,500 dollars. Other costs included food, gasoline and a small fee for the on-site locker.

Nicholas emphasizes in his posts that he is grateful for his sponsors, who provide him with equipment, clubs, balls and clothing. Nevertheless, it is clear that without consistent top results, life on the Korn Ferry Tour is hardly financially sustainable. If you don’t make the cut, you don’t receive any prize money – but the expenses remain.

Challenge Tour: Name change for a golf tour

The Challenge Tour is entering 2025 with an exciting new addition: HotelPlanner, a leading company in the field of travel technology, is becoming the official title sponsor of the tour. From the coming season, the tour will be called the ‘HotelPlanner Tour’. This partnership marks the first title sponsorship of the Challenge Tour since its official foundation in 1989 and represents a milestone in the history of golf’s second division.

Challenge Tour: New name, new chances?

The collaboration is intended to promote the development of the tour by not only increasing the prize money, but also enhancing the quality of the events along the ‘Road to Mallorca’. With a record prize fund of over nine million euros for the 2025 season, the HotelPlanner Tour will offer players new financial incentives. At least €300,000 in prize money has been earmarked for each European event, which means an increase in prize money for a total of 16 tournaments this season. The tour calendar includes 29 events in 18 different countries on three continents. The highlight of the season will be the Rolex Grand Final in Mallorca, supported by The R&A. However, the partnership between HotelPlanner and the Challenge Tour goes beyond title sponsorship. The company will invest in six events in 2025 and support a total of 40 tournaments during the multi-year collaboration. The exact duration of the partnership has not yet been announced.

‘We are delighted to become the title partner of the Challenge Tour. The Challenge Tour has been the foundation of so many great golfing names and we are excited to see the HotelPlanner Tour continue to open doors for the next generation of superstars.’ explains HotelPlanner CEO Tim Hentschel.

HotelPlanner’s strategic partnership with the Challenge Tour comes at a time when the golf market is becoming increasingly globalised and connected. HotelPlanner uses a combination of artificial intelligence and a global customer service network to help travellers worldwide. This technology will also help to drive the Tour’s growth by providing a strong platform for international travel and events, the Tour has revealed.

Name changes in golf

In recent years, name changes for golf tours have become a strategic means of promoting the economic and organisational development of tournaments. One example of this is the renaming of the European Tour to the DP World Tour in 2022, after the global logistics company DP World was acquired as the main sponsor. Another renaming was that of the Korn Ferry Tour, which was known as the Web.com Tour until 2019 after partnering with global recruitment consultancy Korn Ferry.

Charlie Woods plays the first ace of his life at the PNC Championship 2024

For Charlie Woods, it was the first ace of his life. And at the PNC Championship, where all eyes have been on the teenager for several years. Except, in this case, those of his father Tiger Woods. He was busy with his bag when Charlie hit the ball into the hole from the tee on the par-3 4th.

Hole-in-one for Charlie Woods

It was a picture-book Sunday at the Ritz-Carlton GC in Florida. Team Langer and Team Woods met in the final flight and played a cat-and-mouse game over 18 holes to make it into the play-off. Early in the day, 15-year-old Charlie Woods provided a highlight when he holed out for an ace on the first par-3 of the course. Pictures between surprise and joy:

Although it was the first hole-in-one in ten years (and the second ever) at the PNC Championship, it wasn’t to stop there. Paddy Harington, son of Padraig Harrington, also played an ace. Just a few moments after Charlie’s hole-in-one on the 4th, he put the ball in the hole on the 8th.

Charlie and Paddy were not the only players to attract attention. Carson Kuchar, the son of Matt Kuchar, also wowed the crowd. He put the ball into the hole on the par-4 16th with his second shot: hole-out eagle for Team Kuchar.

And last but not least, we look at Gary Player, who at 89 was the oldest player in the field at the 2024 PNC Championship. In round 1, he played “only” even par with his grandson Alexander Hall. On Sunday, they improved by a total of ten strokes. The highlight: Gary Player holed his final putt on the 18th for eagle.

Tommy Fleetwood As Caddy on the Challenge Tour

Tommy Fleetwood, one of the most famous names in professional golf, is returning to his roots on the Challenge Tour this week – not as a player, however, but as a caddy for his stepson Oscar at the UAE Challenge in Abu Dhabi.

Tommy Fleetwood Back on the Challenge Tour

Although it has been over a decade since Fleetwood himself competed in a Challenge Tour event, this tour remains a special place for the current world number 11. In 2011, he secured his first Challenge Tour victory at the Kazakhstan Open and finished the year in first place on the money list, which enabled him to move up to the DP World Tour. The decision to caddy for Oscar shows not only the bond within the Fleetwood family, but also an appreciation for the foundations on which Fleetwood’s own career was built. The family moved to Dubai two years ago and live at Jumeirah Golf Estates, the venue for the DP World Tour, where Oscar is a member and trains as part of the Tommy Fleetwood Academy under the watchful eye of his coach Jackson Bell.

Oscar, just 17 years old, has already won a number of amateur events in the UAE and after his victory at the Ras Al Khaimah Men’s Open has rightly secured a place at this year’s UAE Challenge event at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club. As one of 30 invitations awarded by the Emirates Golf Federation, he will have the chance to compete against rising stars from the DP World Tour and put his skills to the test.

15-Year-Old Miles Russell Makes the Cut On a Professional Tour

Miles Russell causes a sensation at the LECOM Suncoast Classic on the Korn Ferry Tour. At just 15 years old, Russell is the youngest player to make the cut on the Korn Ferry Tour. With rounds of 68 and 66 strokes, he is in T26 after two rounds.

Korn Ferry Tour: 15-year-old makes it to the weekend

Russell plays under the American Junior Golf Association and received a sponsor’s invitation for the tournament just four hours from his home town. He was already on course for a weekend sweep with his 68 in the first round, albeit a close one. He started the tournament with four birdies on the first five holes and didn’t suffer his first dropped shot until his tenth hole. On Friday, he fuelled his quest for the weekend with two eagles on the front nine, followed by two birdies on the back nine and just one bogey.

“I knew it would be a good test to see where I stood against some of the best,” Russell told the Tour. “It’s definitely something I’ll remember even when times get tough; I’ll remember that when it happens and go with the flow.”

The previous record was 16 years and 20 days and was set in 2006 by Gipper Finau, a brother of Tony Finau, at the Utah Championship. Russell surpassed the previous record with 15 years, five months and 17 days.

“It’s a cool record to break. I don’t know how much longer … people are getting so good, so young. It could last another week, you never know, but right now it’s pretty cool.”

Should Russell make it into the top 25 at the weekend, he would also be eligible to take part in next week’s tournament, the Veritex Bank Championship. The only thing he has to wait a little longer for is Korn Ferry Tour membership, for which he has to be at least 18 years old.
